The Nomadic Museum in New York City is a temporary structure built of 152 shipping containers. It was designed by Shigeru Ban for Gregory Colbert’s art exhibit ‘Ashes and Snow,’ and opened in 2005. From New York it moved on to Santa Monica, Tokyo, and elsewhere.

The containers and other recycled materials are stacked 34 feet high. The visitor enters through a central wooden walkway with stone walls over which the art work is suspended by cables. A curtain of teabags hangs 40 feet above this. The materials and arrangement suggest space for the structure alone, space for the artwork, and then finally space for the visitor.

The containers and other recycled materials are stacked 34 feet high. The use of storage containers suggests the traveling nature of the exhibit.
