Atheneum, New Harmony Indiana

The Atheneum at Athens was a library for scholarly and scientific pursuit, built under emperor Hadrian. It is in this spirit of learning that the Atheneum center in New Harmony Indiana brings the community together.

Visitors approach from a long grass field and proceed through the entry to a winding circulation path. The river and city meet in overlapping grids, which form and clash to form spaces of the building. Careful placement of windows and negative spaces frame important places, give views of the town, and frame views of spaces to come. The long ramp points back to town in a grand straight gesture.

Richard Meier & Partners Architects designed the Atheneum in 1979. The strict white geometric Modernism is typical for Meier, and relates to the area in a spacial, abstract way.
