ARCAM Amsterdam Architecture Centre, Amsterdam

René van Zuuk designed the Architectuur Centrum Amsterdam near the NEMO, on the docklands Oosterdok of Amsterdam. It was completed in 2003.

The aquatic form is considerably scaled down near the mammoth Maritime Museum, yet rises like a monolith, straight edged against the water and gently curving over the street. Despite the wrapping aluminium-zinc façade, there is a certain openness due to the brick-patterned glass facades.

It is a remarkable structure that humbly stands behind Renzo Piano’s mighty project, yet ingeniously performs its architectural functions.
