Aberdeen University Library, Scotland

Schmidt hammer lassen architects designed the Library for Aberdeen University, completed in 2011. The shimmering form is strong contrast to the historic college Gothic of the university, founded in 1495. The central swirling staircase could be inspired from the London City Hall and spirals wildly up into the bright sky. These white layers reach up vertically at the exterior facade, this time taking the form of a cube.

A variety of public and private spaces fill the 15,500 m² floor space, eight floors, with up to 1,200 of various reading spaces. It contains over a million books and exhibition spaces. It is designed to be multi-functional as well as culturally significant.
