Cambridge Seven Associates designed the Boston Children’s Museum expansion in 2006. The museum had moved in 1979 to the site of an old brick wool warehouse. This $47m expansion added a modern steel and glazing front to the building and an award-winning plaza by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. The project received a LEED gold rating for green design.
This expansion engages the historic waterfront and takes on a slick industrial look. The windows take exciting forms. In some places they are colored, screened, tilted, or extruded outward as solid shapes. A yellow metal structural tower is reflected inside the main lobby, with a rope climbing structure that has yellow platforms.
